Use this plugin with the feature turned-on that redirects someone logging in back to the page they came from (instead of going to the dashboard they go back to the page where they used the Login form in your sidebar),

I’ve got it working on a site, with basically the above combination to keep Authors out of the wp-admin and dashboard.
